My Journey into the Non-Union Electrician Apprenticeship Program

In 2018, I set my sights on joining an electrician apprenticeship program, but the opportunities on the union side seemed elusive with their limited sign-up windows. Undeterred, I explored the non-union route, which offered year-round sign-ups. Though I knew the union was considered superior, I decided to pursue the non-union path due to its more accessible nature.

In 2021, I took the first step by enrolling in the ABC NorCal program in Northern California. Signing up was a breeze; I simply filled out my details on their website and provided a copy of my high school diploma via email. A few weeks later, I underwent an aptitude test that covered algebra and English comprehension. Having been away from academics for over a decade, I had to refresh my math skills with online practice tests. Luckily, I passed the test and proceeded to attend a virtual orientation via Zoom. Additionally, a drug test was required before being placed on the “ready to dispatch” list.

Since I joined the program without a sponsor, I had to wait patiently for my turn. On August 20, 2021, I inquired about my position on the list and learned that I was ranked in the top 60. Applicants were typically expected to wait around a year and a half before joining the program. The waiting period tested my patience, and by February 28, 2022, I was disappointed to discover that my position hadn’t changed after nearly six months.

However, my perseverance paid off, and by September 25, 2022, I received the encouraging news that I had moved into the top 30 positions. The following December saw me progress another ten ranks, landing me in the top 20. At this rate, I calculated that I should be dispatched within six months.

Finally, in April 2023, the call I had been eagerly awaiting came—the dispatch informed me that my time had come. I promptly resigned from my current job, providing a two-week notice. In May 2023, I underwent another drug test, followed by a refresher orientation through Zoom.

On May 24 2023, the details of the company I was dispatched to were sent to me, marking my first official day as an apprentice electrician. My journey into the non-union electrician apprenticeship program had reached fruition after years of perseverance and dedication.

I hope my explanation provides insight into the process of joining this program and encourages others to pursue their dreams, even if it takes time and patience.
